The brilliant sunlight streaming through the trees up ahead told of an open meadow and the possibility of grazing deer. But as I entered the clearing I realized I had stumbled on industrious beavers expertly building a dam to flood their winter hiding place. Luckily for me, my mountain home was a little easier to set up than theirs. All around me aspen trees had been chewed to the core. I chuckled when I noticed the slides leading to the water. Not only do they use these belly highways to transport fallen branches, they often use them just for fun. I waited patiently as the sun moved between the trees hoping to see them at work.
