"The Mountains are calling and I must go" -John Muir
The seed for Colorado Backcountry Trailers, LLC was planted during an early spring camping trip in the Colorado mountains west of Boulder. Austin, his wife Julie, his dad Thomas, and his brother Morgan had ventured up the mountain in a Rzr 1000 and a Ranger 800 for a weekend of camping. Austin realized there must be a better way than trying to strap all your gear on the back of a Rzr or to ask his dad to put it all in the bed of the Ranger.
Taking a cue from the full-size pull behind trailers that often sell for $40,000 or more and don’t fit the trails of Colorado, Austin presented the idea of creating a trailer with all the conveniences of its full sized cousin, but small enough to fit behind any ATV or UTV at a much more affordable price. Teaming together, the family designed the first Colorado Backcountry Trailer to fit the 50-inch trail width and be light enough to pull.
Building the prototype involved on-trail testing pulling increasingly heavier loads over steep inclines and rock ledges. The ultimate test was Thomas taking the trailer over 10,000 feet in elevation for a 10-day elk hunt. In all of the trials, the trailers rigid welded steel frame and specialty components exceeded all expectation. The Gordiegear TM rooftop tent and vestibule made the transition from hunt to camp easy and enjoyable. The pullout kitchen and LED lighted work surfaces allowed for the typical after dark dinner and the thick foam mattress in the tent provided a warm and comfortable sleep.
